The Opportunity 

We have a fantastic opportunity for a permanent Senior Structural Engineer to join our Consulting Bridges team. As a part of our growth strategy ,we are building a Bridges team in Cardiff. With shared office space in Cardiff, Bristol and Exeter, we welcome applications from the South West regions.

 

The role will primarily involve working on the South West Scheme Delivery Framework for National Highways, with opportunities to work on complex schemes across the UK. As a team, we co-locate with our client at offices in Cardiff, Exeter and Bristol, attending the office three days a week with the remaining days worked remotely.

 

The work spans from feasibility and optioneering all the way through to design and construction. We work across the National Highways network in the South West, which includes large and unique viaducts, culverts, under and overbridges of varying forms, ages, and complexities. We could be designing a strengthening scheme, completing maintenance refurbishments, or executing safety improvements. The variety of scopes and structures on the network means that no two projects are the same.

 

This opportunity would suit a developed Structural Engineer who has attained and looking for the next step, with an understanding of the DMRB and Eurocodes with respect to highway bridge design, strengthening, refurbishment, and assessment. You would be part of a team of around 25 engineers locally of varying levels, supported by 350+ Structures Engineers across the UK with a variety of specialisms. Our focus is on developing and growing organically. You will contribute significantly to this process and gain valuable exposure for your career development

 

The role 

Our Senior Structures Engineers play an important part within the Highways and Designated Funds Design team and alongside our client, National Highways. As a Senior Engineer, you will lead a variety of highway structures schemes and mentoring junior designers. 

Working with Amey, we provide excellent opportunities for you to be involved in some of the most exciting and challenging structural engineering projects associated with Scotland’s arterial road network, and wider a field, which will enable you to further develop your technical, engineering, and professional career.


Current / ongoing project highlights include: 

£1.2bn associated with the North East and South West Trunk Road Management contracts. This includes management responsibility for over 5000 structures including work on the following strategic crossings:

 

The long term management of Severn, Avonmouth and Prince of Wales crossings with National Highways.  Delivering projects such as those listed below:

• Severn Suspension Bridge - £500M Main Cable Augmentation Feasibility Study
• Severn Suspension Bridge – Main Cable Assessment,  Management and Mitigation
• Severn Suspension Bridge – Hanger Replacement Study
• Avonmouth Bridge – 174m main span box girder bridge – assessment and investigation
• Prince of Wales Bridge – Gantry Assessment

 

We also undertake a range of works with Local Authorities over the UK including:


• £3M Banff Bridge scour protection design
• £20M Lagan Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge 
• £120m Clyde Waterfront & Renfrew Riverside
• £80m Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District Scotland

 

 

We want to hear from you if you have

  • Developed experience and expertise within Structures field, probably gained in an Engineer role or equivalent.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of structural design processes and procedures.
  • An ability to produce or oversee the production of technically sound engineering solutions, complying with all relevant technical standards and Client’s requirements.
  • Takes ownership for the preparation and checking of deliverables and can check deliverables to a reasonable standard.
  • Very good working knowledge of relevant software and similar analytical tools (e.g LUSAS, Autodesk Structural Bridge Design).
  • Demonstrates good commercial awareness.
  • Has a good understanding of Safety, Health & Welfare and risk assessment.
  • Substantially experienced in the management and communication of hazards and risks on projects and ensures appropriate risk mitigation and transference has been applied.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding of interface management, and ensures own deliverables align with deliverables produced by other disciplines.
  • Incorporated or Chartered status with Engineers Ireland, ICE or IStructE. or an equivalent professional licence gained through the professional institution to which the individual is aligned is desirable and may be essential on particular contracts.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in an appropriate subject or demonstrable equivalent further learning.
